Berkeley Plantation, Charles City, Virginia
The plantation dates from 1636. Home of Benjamin Harrison, signer of
the Declaration of Independence and his son William Henry Harrison, president of the
United States who was born at Berkeley in 1773.
Union General George B. McClellan, headquartered the Army of Potomac
here in July and August of 1862. During that summer Taps was written and first played here.
