Tom Lincoln's Homestead, Charleston,
Illinois
The last home of Lincoln's father and stepmother,
Sarah Bush Lincoln, whom Abraham loved deeply. Purchased in 1840,
when Abraham was a successful lawyer in Springfield, the property
was known as Goosenest Prairie. The cabin has two rooms and is
actually two one room cabins built close together. When Tom Lincoln
died here in 1851 Abraham did not make the 90 mile buggy trip
from Springfield to attend the funeral. He and his father never
"got on". However, he had willingly provided his father
with cash more than once to keep the farm solvent.
